Extreme obesity a growing problem in American children

Children's Health • • Obesity • • Public HealthMar 21, 10

More and more cases of extreme obesity are being reported in US children, a slap in the face for a country trying to lose weight.

This news comes following a study conducted by researchers from Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, featuring more than 710,000 children between two and 19 years of age.

Many would say “why spend money on a study like this when we already know what the outcome will be?”

Children today are spending the majority of their free time in front of a video game console or computer monitor, and their parents do not seem to care.

Researchers used charts of height and weight of more than 710,000 children who had been for either inpatient or outpatient care during 2007 and 2008.

The children were classified as either overweight, obese or extremely obese.

“Extreme obesity is defined as 120% of the 95th percentile for weight
for age and sex,” explained the study leader.

The results showed that more than 37% of children were overweight, 19.4% were obese and 6.4 were extremely obese.
