Budesonide (Into The Nose)

Budesonide (byoo-DES-oh-nide)

Treats stuffy nose caused by hay fever and other allergies.

Rhinocort Aqua, Rhinocort
There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to anything in this product. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, betamethasone, fluocinonide, or other cortisone drugs.

How to Use This Medicine:

Spray

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use and how often.
  • You may need to use the medicine for a few days before you start to feel better. Keep using the medicine regularly, but You should not use more of it than your doctor ordered.
  • You should get directions with your medicine on how to open the nasal adapter and use the nasal inhaler. If you don't have those directions, ask your doctor or pharmacist for them.
  • Blow your nose to clear your nostrils.
  • Take the medicine out of the foil package.
  • Open the nasal adapter and lock it into place.
  • Shake the medicine well just before using.
  • Insert the tip of the adapter into one nostril and hold the other nostril closed.
  • Hold your breath and push down on the top of the canister to spray the medicine. Do the same in the other nostril.
  • Close the adapter

If a dose is missed:

  • Use the spray as soon as you remember,
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next regular dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Keep your medicine at room temperature, away from heat and light. Do not freeze.
  • The metal container may explode if it gets too hot (over 120 degrees F). Do not poke holes in the container or throw it into a fire.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • You should not use other nose sprays with this medicine, unless prescribed by your doctor.
  • Be sure your doctor knows if you are taking prednisone tablets.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Check with your doctor before using budesonide if you have glaucoma, tuberculosis, diabetes, any infections, including an eye infection caused by herpes. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you see white patches or sores in your mouth while you are being treated with this medicine.
  • If you have had nasal surgery, a nasal injury, or frequent nosebleeds you should not use this medicine until your nose is healed.
  • If your symptoms are not better within three weeks or if they get worse, call your doctor.
  • If you have not had chickenpox or measles and are around someone who does have these infections, tell your doctor.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Hives or rash
  • Swelling of the face, throat, or lips
  • Wheezing or trouble breathing

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Nosebleed, dry mouth
  • Sore throat, hoarseness, or cough
  • Stinging or burning in the nose, sneezing
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
