Chenodiol (By Mouth)

Chenodiol (kee-noe-DYE-ole)

Dissolves certain kinds of gallstones in the body when they cannot be removed by surgery.

There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you are pregnant or if you have pancreas inflammation, liver disease, or bile duct problems. This medicine should not be used if you have had an allergic reaction to chenodiol or other bile acids.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet

  • Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered.
  • You may take the tablets with food.
  • Keep taking the medicine for as long as your doctor tells you to. It may take several months for the medicine to dissolve the stones.

If a dose is missed:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible.
  • If it is almost time for your next regular dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine:

  • Store at room temperature, away from light, heat, or moisture.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • You should not use chenodiol with antacids that contain aluminum (ALternaGEL®, Maalox®, Mylanta®, and others).
  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking Questran®, Colestid®, or other medicine to lower cholesterol, estrogens, or birth control pills.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Check with your doctor before taking chenodiol if you are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, tell your doctor right away.
  • While being treated with the medicine it is important to see your doctor for regular tests to make sure that your liver is working properly and that the gallstone is dissolving.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Severe stomach pain, especially on the right upper side
  • Severe nausea and vomiting.

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Gas or indigestion
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
