How is the condition diagnosed?

Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy begins with a medical history and physical exam. The healthcare provider may detect muscle weakness and decreased sensation. The provider may order tests, including the following:

  • blood tests to look for underlying diseases
  • electromyography, or EMG, which measures the electrical activity of the involved muscles
  • nerve conduction velocity studies, or NCV, which measure the nerve's ability to carry messages
  • X-rays to look for underlying conditions
