What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Signs and symptoms can begin slowly or suddenly. They commonly include:

muscle weakness, usually most severe in the shoulders and thighs

muscle tenderness and pain

difficulty swallowing

trouble breathing, or shortness of breath

abdominal distress, which is more common in children
